52 Shore Street

Description

This 2 ½-storey dwelling dates from the mid-1850s and is situated on the north side of Shore Street between University Avenue and Waterloo Row.

Heritage Value

The heritage value of this dwelling resides in the early development of Shore Street and in the residency of the Gough family. This house was constructed soon after Shore Street opened up between Waterloo Row and University Avenue, or what was then known as Sunbury Street. Shore Street opened in 1851 and this house was occupied by Sarah Gough, widow of Joseph Gough, by 1855.

Mrs. Gough resided in this house with her children until her death in 1860. Eldest son, John, who was variously occupied as a mill hand, teamster, and trader, raised his own family in this house.

This house was enlarged in 1918 when it was purchased by the Rowan family.
