The Preservation Review Board, whose members are appointed by City Council, is concerned with protecting the historic and architectural character of the preservation areas in the city.
The Preservation Review Board’s duties include:
- administering the Preservation By-law
- promoting the economic, educational, and cultural development of the City of Fredericton through the preservation and protection of the distinctive characteristics of buildings and places of historical or architectural significance in preservation areas
- preserving a harmonious outward appearance of structures and settings which is attractive to residents and an enhancement to tourism
- ensuring that construction and renovation of buildings and structures are undertaken in a form compatible with the municipality’s traditional architectural styles
- providing guidance to the public on appropriate standards of design for developments in preservation areas.
Development within a preservation area
No person shall carry out or cause to be carried out any development within a preservation area, whether a building permit or demolition permit has been issued or not, until a Certificate of Appropriateness has been issued by the Board. The Board meets the first Tuesday of every month at noon, in the Second Floor Committee Room at City Hall. These meetings are open to all members of the public.

The City of Fredericton is seeking the names of volunteers willing to serve on the Preservation Review Board.
The Board administers the Heritage Preservation By-Law by reviewing applications for the alteration or demolition of buildings, or for the construction of new buildings, that are contained within a designated area.
Council appoints the Preservation Review Board under the provisions of the Heritage Conservation Act of the Province of New Brunswick.
The Act stipulates that the Board must include:
- one City Councillor, appointed by the Mayor;
- at least one property owner resident of the municipality with demonstrated interest in heritage conservation;
- at least one member of a historical or heritage society; and,
- at least one person with professional knowledge and work experience in architectural heritage.
Others are members-at-large that may come from a mix of backgrounds, including:
professional knowledge and work experience in community planning, urban planning, archaeology or palaeontology;
- be a member of a natural or cultural society;
- be a non-residential user in the municipality, as defined in the Business Improvement Areas Act;
- be a resident of a municipal heritage conservation area established by the municipality; or
- be a resident of the municipality who has a general interest in heritage conservation in the municipality.
Unless otherwise notified, members of the Preservation Review Board meet on the first Tuesday of every month at noon at City Hall, with additional meetings as the need arises.
These are volunteer positions, and as such, no remuneration is provided. Anyone interested in serving on the Preservation Review Board is asked to submit a letter and brief résumé demonstrating their qualifications and experience, to the undersigned on or before Friday, May 28, 2021.
The composition of the board must reflect the gender and linguistic representation, as well as the cultural and geographic diversity of the City.
