Grants & Awards

The Community Recognition awards, formally, Unsung Hero Awards are meant to acknowledge those individuals who go above and beyond to help build and shape their community. This includes helping bolster the work of social groups and organizations that offer recreational, cultural, or charitable services to the community.

If you know of someone who is deserving of such an award, please nominate them by filling out the online form below. The nomination deadline is Friday, May 3, 2024 at 4:00PM.

Two Intercultural Awards are given to an individual and to a group, organization or business that has demonstrated a sustained commitment and effort to enhance Fredericton’s cultural diversity, to promote interculturalism, to help combat prejudice, and/or to assist newcomers and immigrants in integrating to life in the community. 

Here are some examples of the activities for which you can nominate a person, group, organization or business: 

• Advocacy: Advocating for an immigration issue, such as recognition of foreign credentials, federal regulations that affect provincial immigration (migration caps), provincial immigration programs, support services, etc.

• Arts: Creating/organizing an exhibition, a film or streetscape art that promotes cultural harmony and understanding.

• Awareness: Involvement in a project, initiative, service, or media that promotes awareness of issues related to promoting cultural diversity, interculturalism and combating prejudice.

• Business: Leveraging or developing specific linguistic and cultural skills of employees to create and market products and services, thus enhancing the vibrancy of Fredericton’s entrepreneurial community.

• Employers: Providing training and resources to ensure workers of all cultural backgrounds will be safe, productive and aware of their rights and responsibilities.

• First Nation Relations & Culture: Fostering connections between members of the Wolastoqewiyik First Nation and the non-indigenous communities in Fredericton.

• Foreign direct investment: Attracting FDI, through access to a global network, with a positive economic impact on Fredericton’s economy.   

• Francophone Relations & Culture: Helping promote Francophone culture within immigrant communities in the city. 

• Gender & Sexual Minorities: Creating awareness of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Two-Spirit, Queer, or Questioning issues among immigrant communities.

• International Students: Building connections between international students and the Fredericton community to promote student retention and workforce development.

• Recreation & Sport: Encouraging the involvement of immigrants of various ages and origins in local recreation and sport.

• Seniors & Persons with Different Abilities: Providing appropriate care and support for immigrants with different abilities or who are older adults while helping to combat social isolation in those two groups.

• Settlement: Assisting newcomers with the immigration process, hosting prospective residents, or helping facilitate community involvement so that they may become fully participating members of society.

• Tutoring: Developing or delivering programs/activities that build skills or knowledge of immigrants to participate fully in all aspects of our community.

• Volunteerism: Recognizing volunteer contributions to promote multiculturalism and interculturalism.

• Women: Supporting the participation of immigrant women in leadership roles within our society.

• Youth: Encouraging immigrant youth engagement and leadership within our society.

• Other.:Any other category that you think is pertinent to this award.

The Arts, Culture and Heritage Funding Program of the City of Fredericton is designed to encourage new projects or activities in the creative arts, culture and heritage sectors through the provision of small grants to eligible organizations. A total of $100,000 is available for 2025, and Grants are awarded through a jury process.

The focus of the Community Funding Grants is to encourage the growth and stability of non-profit organizations in the city whose purpose and activities align to achieve the outcomes of a more livable and economically viable community.

Funding may be made available for festivals & events; educational & cultural development; recreation & tourism program support; arts, culture & heritage; as well as festival & event innovation and greening.

The grant must be applied to a specific program or service or used as capital funding for the construction of facilities or the purchase of equipment that will benefit to the community at large.

Past applicants are reminded that successful applications received under any of the grant categories for the same purpose or event are only considered once and limited to one annual grant from the City of Fredericton.

The City’s Municipal Finance and Corporate Administration has approved, in principle, an amount of $381,250 for the 2025 Community Funding Grants, up $13,250 from 2024 to account for inflation.

The deadline for eligible groups to apply to the Community Funding Grants is Friday, October 11, 2024 at 4:30 pm.

A total of $300,000 is available to community groups under the 2025 Strategic Partner Capital Grants, from which City Council has already committed $50,000 in funding for 2025 to the Beaverbrook Art Gallery Capital Campaign.

Strategic Partner Capital Grants are intended to encourage the growth and stability of strong, sustainable non-profit organizations whose purpose and services fit within the City’s municipal mandate.

Funding will support significant physical infrastructure capital projects, which must align with the City’s Municipal Plan and help achieve the outcomes of the City’s eight program result areas:  Corporate, Economic Vitality, Environmental Stewardship, Governance & Civic Engagement, Livable Community, Mobility, Public Safety, and Sustainable Infrastructure.

The deadline for eligible groups to apply to the Strategic Partner Capital Grants is Friday, October 11, 2024 at 4:30 pm.

A total of $30,000 in Climate Change Action Grants are available to support non-profit organizations in carrying out projects, programs, or activities that align with actions in the City’s Community Energy and Emissions Plan or Climate Change Adaptation Plan. Eligible initiatives should fall under one of the following categories:

• Energy efficiency or energy source shift in buildings initiatives
• Transportation mode shift (active transportation, public transit, e-mobility) initiatives
• Waste reduction or circular economy initiatives
• Climate change adaptation – education & outreach initiatives
• Climate change adaptation – capital project
