2021 Summer Artist in Residence Program - Call for Applicants

The third annual City of Fredericton Artist-in-Residence program will take place this summer in Odell Park and the Fredericton Botanic Garden.  The program provides a unique opportunity for artists to work on creative projects in the natural surroundings of one of Canada’s best old-growth forests or in the nearby community-run botanic garden (open and free to the public).

Local artists are invited to submit a proposal for a two-week residency in either location. Please note that due to COVID-19, this year’s Artist in Residence Program will be limited to artists in Health Zone 3, so in the event of travel restrictions, there will not be any unexpected gaps in the schedule.

Measures implemented last summer to comply with Provincial public safety protocols will be in effect again this summer.  This means that artists will be located outside in the park or gardens, rather than inside a building. Artists may select a location which suits their work and will be provided with portable lawn signs which will indicate that they are the ‘artist in residence’.  Park and garden visitors are encouraged to interact with artists while maintaining existing physical distancing requirements.

Additionally, rather than hosting in-person community engagement activities, artists are required to engage with the community through online activities. Artists will be active on social media with brief daily updates on their residency as well as occasional more in-depth interactions such as a demo, artist talk, workshop.

Residencies are available during July or August and includes a stipend of $500 per week. This residency is open to all artists working in any medium. Artists are asked to include a description of the online/social media community engagement activities they plan to deliver. Special consideration will be given to how an artist can make the best use of the unique forest and garden settings.

The artist is expected to be in residence during the day, Monday to Friday.  Artists may also consult with members of the Botanic Garden and or a City forester (subject to advance notice and availability) to gain knowledge about the natural surroundings which can be incorporated into their residency work.

Interested Artists can find the full call for applications and details on how to apply by visiting the City’s website at www.fredericton.ca/artistinresidence. The deadline to apply is March 5, 2021.
