City announces new COVID-19 spin on favourite recreation programs

Fredericton Recreation staff have been working hard to create a selection of summer programs for children/youth that will meet all COVID-19 requirements and keep children and staff safe.

As a result, they are happy to announce that outdoor swim lessons, the Northside Youth Center and Skateboard Day Camps, as well as the Zig Zag Summer Playground Program will all happen this summer, with a few changes.

In addition, staff have added a new Nature Day Camp in the final two weeks of the summer, hosted at Odell Lodge and Killarney Lake Rotary Centennial Lodge.

Outdoor Swim Lessons

Classes will be based on time slot not level! The bonus here is all the children in a family can come at once and the swim instructors will divide them into teachable groupings. Children in the lower levels (Swimmer 2 and under) will require a parent or guardian in the water with them to offer physical support.

Only 12 children (plus guardians if needed) will be permitted in any one time slot to comply with health regulations. Instructors will facilitate various levels of instruction from the pool deck and provide individual guidance and feedback to parents and their children.

Sign up now using the swimming lesson link at www.fredericton.ca/recreation. If you have questions please call 506-460-2273. This is the same process that will be done for lessons at the indoor pool.

Northside Youth Centre and Skateboard Day Camps

The Northside Youth Centre (NYC) will be open this summer from June 30 to Sept 7. It will be the same great space with a few changes including shorter hours (1-7 pm from Tuesday-Friday and 1-5 pm on Saturday and Sunday). Staff will pay careful attention to physical distancing, additional sanitization and screening measures. No rentals or overnight camps will occur this summer. For more details, visit the recreation programs web page at www.fredericton.ca/recreation.

In addition, the NYC being open, Fredericton Recreation will be offering the same popular skateboard day camps, with less kids per camp (maximum of 15), and additional sanitization and screening measures. There will be six weeks of full-day camps and then four weeks of half-day only camps at the end of the summer. Sign up now, spaces are very limited. For more details, visit the recreation programs web page at www.fredericton.ca/recreation.

Zig Zag Summer Playground Program

Fredericton Recreation’s popular Zig Zag Summer Playground Program is back this summer, with a few changes. The program will begin July 6. Due to COVID-19, 15 children can attend per park time slot. Children can be in a morning group or afternoon group, but not both. This program will still be provided free of charge within neighborhood parks across the City. On-line program pre-registration will be required this summer (no on-site registrations will be accepted). For more details, visit the recreation programs web page at www.fredericton.ca/recreation.

Nature Day Camps

A fun new addition to Fredericton Recreation’s summer programming is the Nature Day Camps at Odell Lodge and Killarney Lake Rotary Centennial Lodge. The camps will be a great way to end of the summer and promise small groups with loads of fun.

The program will start August 24 and run for two, one-week sessions at each lodge location. Day camps will be offered from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, Monday to Friday. Maximum participation is 15 youth per camp (as per COVID-19 Recovery Phase: Guidance to Early Learning and Childcare Facilities and Summer Camps).

Online registration will be required. For more details, and to register, visit the recreation programs web page at www.fredericton.ca/recreation.
