City of Fredericton Gets Top Marks for Climate Action

Global non-profit places Fredericton on A-List for its leadership, commitment, and transparency on climate action

The City of Fredericton has been named to the Climate Action A-List by CDP, a global, environmental impact non-profit known as the gold standard of environmental reporting and disclosure by the global economy. Fredericton is among 122 cities recognized for their ambition, leadership and transparency on climate action on the 2022 CDP Cities A List.

A List Cities are demonstrating climate leadership through concerted effort and effective action. They are taking 3x as many mitigation and adaptation measures as non-A list cities. To score an A, among other actions, a city must disclose publicly through CDP-ICLEI Track and have a city-wide emissions inventory. It must have published a climate action plan and a long-term (by 2050) net-zero target or a mid-term target that is aligned with a fair share of limiting global warming to 1.5C.

Cities must also complete a climate risk and vulnerability assessment and have a climate adaptation plan to demonstrate how it will tackle climate hazards. By reporting climate data through CDP each year, Fredericton is being transparent about its climate action, tracking progress, monitoring risks and benchmarking against other cities facing similar challenges.

“The City of Fredericton has been a leader in taking action around climate change and I’m proud of the work done so far”, said Coun. Kevin Darrah, Chair of the City’s Environmental Stewardship Committee.  “We’ve committed to managing our environmental risks and impact by establishing ambitious emissions reduction targets – targets that I have every confidence we’ll meet over time.”

The information on the dashboard is updated annually and we will also regularly assess the need for additional indicators.
