City of Fredericton Poet Laureate 2021 / 2022 – Call for Submissions

The City is seeking a dynamic and talented individual to become our next poet laureate. The Laureate will focus on the written and spoken word, specifically through the creation of original poems/writings and their public delivery.

The successful applicant, a resident of the city, will have achieved excellence among their peers and have a body of work including poetry and other writing that demonstrates a connection to the city and to the citizens of Fredericton. They will also demonstrate the positive impact of literature, poetry, and the spoken word by engaging with the public during activities, programs, and special events.

The Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term. The successful applicant will receive an honorarium of $5,000 per year ($10,000 total). Funds to support additional activities or legacy projects of the program will be available at the discretion of Cultural Development staff, subject to budget availability. 

Over the course of their tenure, the Poet Laureate will propose and deliver a legacy project which may include a publication, community art project, installation, or another initiative.  In addition, they will be required to compose six original works of poetry annually for selected official City events and Council meetings.  These could include the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony (December), National Poetry Month celebrations (April), and other occasions as they arise.
