City Parks to host 4th Annual Summer Artist in Residence Program

The City of Fredericton is hosting eleven artists this summer to work “en plein air” or “in the great outdoors” in two City parks.

From Monday, June 27 until Friday, September 2, the public will be able to find artists in different locations throughout Killarney Lake Park or the Fredericton Botanic Garden. They will spend one or two weeks working and creating in a park from Monday through Friday during the day (hours vary).

Artists will demonstrate their techniques in fibre and textile arts, music composition, dance, painting, illustration, film making, and weaving. Their work will be inspired by the surrounding landscape and plant life. Visitors are welcome to talk with the artists and learn about their work and creative processes.

“After four years, the Artist in Residence Program has become invaluable to residents and visitors in Fredericton,” said Mayor Kate Rogers. “It is so inspiring to watch an artist produce one of their pieces in a city park, surrounded by nature and beauty. I look forward to seeing this program continue to grow in years to come.”

Killarney Lake Park features natural landscapes and an Acadian forest, with a significant hemlock ridge running through the north east section of the park. Located at the western end of Odell Park, the Fredericton Botanic Garden is home to several perennial beds, a collection of rhododendrons and azaleas, woodland trails, a rose garden, and more.

Among the artists participating, will be watercolour artist and retired art teacher Peggy Holt will paint the flower gardens at the Botanic Garden and will share her skills through demonstrations, an artist talk, and will also offer a workshop during her residency.

Award-winning fiddler Katherine Moller will explain the composition process as she develops new tunes at Killarney Lake Park.
