Police News

The Fredericton Police Force takes all reports of hate crimes, determined or suspected, very seriously and investigates accordingly in cooperation with our community. Police-reported data on hate crimes reflect only incidents that come to the attention of police and that are subsequently classified as hate crimes. We encourage the community to report any and all hate related crimes promptly.

Of the files determined to be motivated by hate, more than half relate to graffiti/vandalism and in files where hate was suspected to be a motivating factor, just under half were related to graffiti/vandalism.

It should be noted that in relation to graffiti, one writer may contribute to several files being investigated, which will increase the number of reported files but not the overall source of hate crimes in Fredericton.

The reported statistics align with the rise of graffiti/vandalism in Fredericton over the recent years, the Fredericton Police Force has urged the community to report any and all instances experienced to identify trends, specific writers and focus our response.

The remaining instances in all cases pertain to gender and sexual orientation, hate speech, ethnicity and most recently, religion.

The Fredericton Police Force’s Major Crime Unit is still investigating this most recent case, and are still seeking tips from the public.  Any tip, no matter how big or small, can help as these cases can be challenging to investigate.
