Call for submissions: City of Fredericton is looking for a new Poet Laureate

Type(s)
City Hall

Are you Fredericton’s next Poet Laureate?

The Poet Laureate serves as an advocate for literature, poetry, and the spoken word in New Brunswick’s capital city.

The current Poet Laureate, Jordan Trethewey, will be concluding his tenure this summer and the City is looking for a successful candidate to take over the role in September, 2024. The chosen applicant will be Fredericton’s fourth Poet Laureate, who will be tasked with creating original poems and delivering them to the public.

The online call for submissions invites applications from Fredericton-based writers who have a notable body of work and who have earned recognition for contributions in the literary community. The Poet Laureate will serve a two-year term and receive an honorarium of $5,000 each year. Funds to support additional programming activities or legacy projects will be available at the discretion of the City’s Arts & Culture Department and is subject to budget availability.

Roles and responsibilities include:

  • Creating a unique legacy project to connect with the residents of Fredericton. This may include a publication, community art project or installation, or another initiative approved by the City.
  • Representing the City and engaging with the public as Poet Laureate during local activities, programs, and other special events.
  • Composing at least six original works of poetry each year for selected City events and Council meetings.  This could include the Mayor’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting in December or National Poetry Month in April.

All applications must be submitted to culture@fredericton.ca by June 5, 2024. For more information, visit: https://www.fredericton.ca/en/recreation-culture/arts-culture/poet-laur…
