On Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at approximately 7:00 a.m., the Fredericton Police Force (FPF) responded to a hostage situation on Dykeman Street. Various units, including the Emergency Response Team, Crisis Negotiation Team, Forensic Identification, Major Crime, and patrol officers were on the scene. The New Brunswick RCMP’s Emergency Response Team, as well as its’ Police Service Dog unit and the Saint John Police Force’s Police Service Dog unit also supported the operation. The Provincial Explosive Disposal Unit were also on scene.
A secure perimeter was established, and the hostage was released soon after. Residents were advised to shelter in place, and a temporary shelter was provided for those evacuated.
Police successfully apprehended the suspect, 32-year-old Codi Martin, shortly after 12:00 p.m. He was unlawfully at large and subject to a Canada-wide warrant. Martin will be returned to federal custody.
Martin is facing the following charges:
- Unlawfully at large s. 145(1)(a) C.C.
- Unauthorized possession of a firearm contrary to Section 91(1) CCC
- Unsafe Storage of a firearm 86(3)(a)C.C.
- Possession of a prohibited weapon s.91(2) CCC (Taser)
- Possession contrary to Order contrary s.117(3)(a)CCC
The FPF appreciates the public's patience and cooperation during the incident. We would also like to thank our law enforcement partners, NB RCMP and SJPD, for their assistance in this matter. This event highlights the effectiveness of coordinated efforts with partner agencies and community support.
