Each year, September 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. The City of Fredericton is committed to strengthening our relationships with Indigenous Peoples and we feel strongly that honouring the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a vital component of the reconciliation process.
We encourage residents to observe Truth and Reconciliation Day by wearing orange, attending an event, learning more about the history and culture of Indigenous Peoples, and being considerate of Indigenous communities who are reflecting on their history.
Opportunities to participate include:
- St Mary’s First Nation is leading a walk in support of Every Child Matters, “Psi-te Wasis Okimqosu Olotahkewakon”. The walk will begin at 10:20 on Monday, September 30, at the St Mary’s First Nation’s Old Reserve and end at 11 am with a Ceremony held at Officers’ Square.
- The Under One Sky, “Psi-te Npomawsuwinuwok (All My People)”, event is taking place from 12-5 pm on Monday, September 30, at the St Mary’s First Nation’s Old Reserve.
In addition, the City reminds the public of the following hours of operation for Truth and Reconciliation Day on Monday, September 30, 2024.
- City Hall and other administrative offices will be closed.
- Transit will operate based on its normal schedule.
- Regular garbage and recycling collection will occur.
- Arenas and the Fredericton Indoor Pool will remain open following their usual operating hours. Sports fields will remain open as well (weather depending).
- The Nashwaaksis Field House will be closed on Monday, September 30.
