The Fredericton Police Force in partnership with MADD Greater Fredericton is implementing a new awareness campaign around impaired driving. Signs will be placed along roadways around the city, identifying locations where impaired drivers have been arrested by police.
The signs display the saying “Impaired Driver Caught Here”, which is intended to remind motorists of the prevalence of impaired driving and to call 9-1-1 to report a suspected impaired driver.
In 2019 and 2020, Fredericton Police officers responded to 281 incidents of impaired driving, which resulted in 244 total charges. For now, the signs have been placed at the location of the most recent incidents. The signs will be moved periodically, to reflect new arrests, and will be in place until the fall.
“If you suspect someone is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, please call 9-1-1 immediately. You could potentially save a life or prevent injury due to a collision caused by impaired driving “, says FPF-MADD Liaison Cst. Garret Fancy. “Impaired driving is still one of the top five causes of motor vehicle collisions and poses a huge risk to everyone on the road.”
This initiative has been deployed in other cities across Canada, including Saskatoon and Regina, both in Saskatchewan.
