September marks the beginning of another school year and the Fredericton Police Force would like to take the opportunity to remind the public that back to school safety is everyone’s responsibility. Students, parents, educators, and the policing community all have a role to play to ensure everyone heading back to school has a safe school year ahead.
This September’s Traffic Safety Focus has two enforcement initiatives:
- Speeding in a School Zone:
- MVA Section 140.1(5)
- Fine: $340.50 - $1204.50
- Passing a School Bus Displaying Flashing Red Lights:
- MVA Section 188(1)
- Fine: $580.50
With students returning to class this week, we expect to see increased both motor vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Fredericton Police Force will be enforcing speed limits in school zones around the city, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6. The speed limit for school zones is 30 km unless otherwise posted. (e.g. Garden Creek, Royal Road, Kingsclear) are 50 km.
Motorists are reminded of the following:
- Slow down and always respect the speed limit in school zones.
- Traffic in both directions must stop when a school bus has its red lights flashing. Wait until the bus driver has turned off the red lights before proceeding.
- Yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Always pay attention to crossing guards and school buses with their lights flashing yellow.
The Fredericton Police Force wishes all students a happy and safe start to the new school year.
