Fredericton Police Force (FPF) wish to advise the public that a dangerous drug known as bromazolam has been linked to a recent overdose, which resulted in death.
Police suspect that bromazolam is present in the illicit drug supply in Fredericton and are urging drug users to be cautious. Bromazolam is often mixed with street drugs, including meth and fentanyl.
It is important to note that NARCAN, will not reverse the effects of bromazolam. It will however reverse the effects of opioids, such as fentanyl. There are no warning signs of bromazolam’s presence, as it cannot be detected by sight, smell, or taste.
Bromazolam is not approved for medical use in any country and can lead to serious adverse effects, including death, especially when taken with opioids such as fentanyl. Several public health agencies across the country, including New Brunswick, have issued warnings about the dangers of bromazolam.
The FPF wants to remind the public that the Good Samaritan Drug Overdose Act provides legal protection to anyone seeking emergency support during an overdose, including the person experiencing the overdose.
The FPF are deeply committed to the safety of all its citizens, particularly our most vulnerable populations and those at risk. We urge anyone using drugs to be aware of the increased risk and to seek help if needed. We also encourage friends and family members of those at risk to reach out to local health services for support and information.
