The GRANDPARENT SCAM is making its rounds in Fredericton.
Otherwise known as the ‘Emergency Scam’, fraudsters prey on your fear of a loved one being hurt or in trouble.
Under this scam, the victim receives a call from someone pretending to be a grandchild or other loved one. The fraudster claims the grandchild has been arrested or in a precarious situation and needs money immediately. They will often have personal details at the ready which makes the claim seem more legitimate.
The victim is asked to send money to a specific account, which can result in significant financial loss.
What should you do to avoid becoming a victim?
- Be suspicious of calls that demand money
- No police agency will ever demand immediate payment of any kind.
- Do not ever give out personal information to unsolicited callers
- Contact another family member to confirm the story.
- Remember to never send money to someone under uncertain conditions.
- Don't be afraid to say "No".
- HANG UP!
The Canadian Bankers Association has published a useful fact sheet to avoid falling victim to this type of scam. Consider printing it out and putting it by the phone as a reminder.
