The Fredericton Police Force would like to advise local area retailers to be aware of counterfeit US currency that is being circulated in the City.
While an arrest was made on March 21, 2024, multiple reports of counterfeit US currency continue to be reported to the Fredericton Police.
Methods to authenticate US currency being presented as form of payment:
1. Hold the bill up to the light. For all bills except $1 and $2 dollar bills, there should be a security thread (plastic strip) running from top to bottom.
2. Use an ultraviolet (black) light to look at security threads. Plastic strips in denominations $5 and above should glow a specific color.
3. Tilt the bill to examine the color-shifting ink in the lower right-hand corner, a security feature introduced in 1996 on higher denomination bills.
4. Check the Watermark. Hold the note to light to see a faint image to the right of the portrait on denominations $5 and higher.
If you have been impacted by counterfeit US currency, or suspect that it may be counterfeit, we encourage you to contact the Fredericton Police Force at 506-460-2300, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477, to remain anonymous.
