SCAM ALERT!
Fredericton Police are alerting residents to a significant increase in scam and fraud complaints. Scams are becoming more sophisticated, making it crucial to stay informed to protect yourself and your loved ones.
Scammers often pose as law enforcement officers or government officials, contacting victims via phone, email, or pop-up messages. They falsely claim criminal charges linked to your IP address, alleging your IP address is associated with illegal activities. Using threats of arrest or fines, they create urgency and demand payment through untraceable methods like gift cards, wire transfers, and cryptocurrency exchanges.
Tips to Avoid Becoming a Victim:
• Be suspicious of calls demanding money.
• Police agencies will never demand immediate payment to avoid arrest.
• Never give out personal information to unsolicited callers.
• Confirm the story with another family member.
• Never send money under uncertain conditions.
• Don't be afraid to say "No."
• HANG UP!
Report all fraud cases to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre.
