Update on Fatal Stabbing Incident - Charges Laid

On June 21st, 2024, the Fredericton Police Force (FPF) responded to a call of a fight in progress on the 500 block of Union Street. Upon arrival, police found a 71-year-old male, later identified as Mark Albert Brooks of Sitansisk, who had been critically injured from a stabbing. Despite being quickly transported to the hospital, Mr. Brooks unfortunately succumbed to his injuries.

Three suspects were apprehended in connection with the incident. Two 17-year-old males were held in custody and presented in court today.  Their identities are protected under the Youth Criminal Justice Act (YCJA). 

The charges are as follows: 

•    Youth #1 – Second Degree Murder sec. 235(1) CCC
•    Youth #2 – Manslaughter sec. 236 CCC

A third youth, a 15-year-old male, was also arrested but has since been released.

Police were able to quickly determine the sequence of events in detail and promptly lay charges against the two youths. This was made possible with the help of witness statements and video evidence provided by local establishments.

The Fredericton Police Force extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mark Albert Brooks, as well as the Sitansisk community, for their loss. The FPF’s victim witness team is working closely with those affected.

We thank the public, witnesses who came forward, and local establishments who provided video evidence, which played a crucial part in the investigation.
