The Fredericton Police Force is warning residents of Fredericton that there has been an escalation in the number of complaints related to stolen vehicle files.
To date in 2022, there have been 186 stolen vehicles files, as compared to 123 in 2021, and 136 in 2020. Since the beginning of November, there have been seven stolen vehicles files.
Many incidents are happening in various neighborhoods throughout the city, typically during the overnight hours. Many of the targeted vehicles had been left unlocked, or were locked, broken into where extra keys or keyless entry fobs were left inside the vehicle.
Residents are asked to do the following to help protect themselves against this type of crime:
- Lock your vehicles
- Remove any extra sets of keys
- Don't leave a keyless entry fob in a vehicle or unprotected at the front entrance of your home
- Park in well-lit areas when you can
- Install a motion sensor/camera on your property
- Pay attention, particularly at night, to anyone suspicious in your neighbourhood and call police immediately if you see something.
Help us help you. Lock your vehicles, remove any valuables, and always keep your keys with you. This deters crimes of opportunity and reduces your and saves the police valuable investigative time. Should your vehicle be stolen, contact the Fredericton Police Force at 260-2300 as well as your insurance provider immediately. Reporting a vehicle as soon as possible after it is stolen increases the chance of recovery.
