The City of Fredericton’s Community Safety Services Unit responded to more than 3,200 calls for service in 2025, enhancing public safety and improving cleanliness with faster response times and effective service along city trails, throughout downtown and on Main Street.

The CSSU provided a report on year-to-date activities to Fredericton City Council’s Public Safety Committee at its regular meeting on November 27, 2025.

By maintaining a visible presence and through proactive enforcement, the CSSU has been able to free up time for the Fredericton Police Force to focus on complex and urgent public safety matters.

Year-to-date in 2025, the CSSU's call for service included assistance with cleanups, return of stolen items, loitering, and more. The unit has:

  • Collected over 11,300 needles
  • Returned more than 400 shopping carts
  • Responded to nearly 10,800 loitering-related calls

Additionally, reports of graffiti have significantly decreased since the CSSU became active.

“It is critical that the residents of Fredericton feel safe when they go to work, go to school, go for walks and take in all our city has to offer,” said Councillor Eric Megarity, Chair of the Public Safety standing committee. “The CSSU has stepped up to provide a service the community values, while work to address the root causes of issues such as the lack of affordable housing, substance use disorder and crime is underway”

The City of Fredericton launched the CSSU in 2023 in response to community concerns and to support the Fredericton Police Force and By-law Enforcement. In late 2024, the unit expanded to offer 24/7 service and has played a key role as the city addresses ongoing safety concerns. The importance of the CSSU’s work was further highlighted in recommendations from the Mayor’s Community Safety Task Force report released in May 2025.

CSSU officers have built strong relationships and made a visible difference in the city’s two key business districts. The responsibilities include:

  • Monitoring and reporting vandalism, graffiti, and other public disturbances
  • Supporting individuals living rough by connecting them to local services
  • Responding to complaints from residents and businesses
  • Returning stolen property
  • Working closely with downtown and Main Street businesses to improve safety
  • Educating the public on trail safety and pet etiquette

While these efforts are making an impact, many underlying and complex social issues must be addressed to create lasting change. This aligns with the goals of the city-led Community Safety Task Force, which aims to provide both immediate and long-term solutions.

The CSSU can be reached by phone at 506-269-6988 or by email cssu@fredericton.ca. CSSU are to be contacted for non-emergencies. If a crime is in progress, call 911 immediately.
