Challenge Statement: In order to reach targets of reducing community GHG emissions 50 percent by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050, huge transformative action is required by the residents and municipal corporation. There are numerous goals contained within the Community Energy & Emissions Plan (CEEP) (PDF) and the Climate Change Adaptation Report (PDF); however this challenge will focus on reducing transportation GHG emissions using data and technology.
This is a two-part challenge:
-
Data:
The biggest constraint within this challenge is the lack of data. Our current emissions calculations for transportation are based on many assumptions. Better data are required to understand the current state of Fredericton’s transportation-related GHG emissions; as well as residents’ modal share (also called mode-share and mode-split) which refers to the type of transportation and number or percentage of trips by type.Data will lead to better informed decision-making to steer future infrastructure investments (e.g. expanding bike lanes, new transit routes, etc.), and to target communications and public awareness campaigns. More robust data will enable the City of Fredericton to more accurately measure the impact of its efforts and demonstrate progress in a transparent manner.
-
Technology:
The second part of this challenge is exploring how we can use persuasive technology to motivate residents to question their mobility choices, and to shift from personal vehicles to alternative, low carbon modes of transportation such as active transportation, e-micro-mobility, and public transit. How might we enable residents to understand and track their personal carbon footprint, and to take ownership and action by choosing environmentally conscious forms of transportation thus impacting community GHG reduction targets? How can we measure the effectiveness of such a tool using data?
