The Fredericton Fire Department, in partnership with the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development and FireSmart NB, invites residents of all ages to participate in two important community events focused on wildfire prevention and property protection.
FireSmart Community Education Event – April 12
The first event will take place at Odell Lodge on April 12 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. where Provincial experts will provide residents with essential information on safeguarding their homes and neighborhoods from wildfires. With wildfires becoming more frequent and severe across Canada—burning more than 2.1 million hectares of forest annually—it is critical that individuals understand the risks and take proactive measures. The event is free to attend, and open to everyone. The session will be presented in English, with English and French handouts available.
The FireSmart NB program offers practical, community-driven solutions to reduce wildfire risks in urban and rural areas. Fire safety experts will share actionable tips that homeowners can implement to protect their properties, and their community. Following the presentation, Provincial experts will be available to answer questions.
“This is an opportunity for residents to take action and learn how small changes can make a big difference in protecting their properties from wildfires,” said Dwayne Killingbeck, Fire Chief for the Fredericton Fire Department. “With wildfires becoming more frequent and severe, we must work together to build resilient communities.”
Wildfire Community Preparedness Day, a nationwide event – May 3
Building on the knowledge gained during the April 12 event, the Fredericton Fire Department encourages residents to take action on May 3 as part of a nationwide event called Wildfire Community Preparedness Day. This day serves as a call to action for homeowners and community members to apply what they’ve learned by actively reducing wildfire risks around their properties.
Residents are encouraged to remove brush, clean gutters, create defensible space around their homes, and work together to plan for fire-smart yards. By taking these steps, individuals can directly contribute to making their community more resilient against wildfires. A base of operations will be established where residents can drop by if they have any questions.
All community members are encouraged to participate. Families, homeowners, and outdoor enthusiasts will gain valuable insights into wildfire preparedness and have the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice.
