Calling all residents who are considering running for Fredericton City Council in May’s municipal election. The City of Fredericton is offering a weeklong program for potential candidates to gain firsthand knowledge on the responsibilities that go along with being a City Councillor.
This experience will take you through the preparation that goes into participating in meetings and making decisions that impact the daily lives of the people you represent.
What does City Council do?
City Council is responsible for conducting the business of municipal government. This is done through a variety of meetings, including regular Council meetings, Council-in-Committee meetings, Standing Committee meetings, and other committee and board meetings.
What will participants be doing?
The program will be running from Tuesday, February 17, to Monday, February 23. Participants will attend council and committee meetings to gain insights into the role and responsibilities associated with serving on Fredericton City Council.

Please note meetings are in the evening and over the lunch hour as many City Councilors have full-time roles outside of their elected responsibilities.

Guidelines for public facing communications from candidates:
Having residents put their name forwards to run in the upcoming municipal election is critical to our democracy and the City of Fredericton encourages anyone who is interested in running for City Council to do so.
Below are guidelines for public communications from candidates to ensure voters are aware and informed. These guidelines will help residents' identity who is running for City Council and minimize confusion as the City of Fredericton maintains its operations throughout the election period.
- Clearly identify your name and what position you are running for (i.e. Ward Councillor or Mayor)
- Provide contact information for potential voters to reach you (i.e. website, phone number, social media, email address etc.)
- Do not present yourself as an elected official i.e. communications should say “Candidate for / elect / re-elect John Smith for Ward 123” not “John Smith, Ward 123”
- Do not use the City of Fredericton logo, wave, and corporate brand guidelines in any communication with the public as a candidate for the upcoming municipal election. The City of Fredericton logo is strictly for:
- Communications originating from the City of Fredericton (i.e. news releases, social media posts on corporate managed accounts, City created digital and print materials)
- City sponsored events (i.e. community events, corporate partnerships etc.)
