About the High Priority Disaster Response Registry
The High Priority Disaster Response Registry is a program managed by Fredericton EMO to help identify and support residents who may need extra assistance during a disaster and who do not have friends and family to help them. By registering, you help Fredericton EMO to plan so someone can check in on you during a disaster and help with evacuation if needed.
The High Priority Disaster Response Registry is used when Fredericton EMO is activated for disasters like major floods or major wildfires.
Family, friends, and caregivers are first line of support during approaching disasters.
Who Should Register
This registry is designed for people living within Fredericton city limits who may have difficulty responding to emergency warnings or evacuating on their own, and who do not have nearby family, friends, or caregivers to assist them.
You should consider registering if you do not have friends, family, or caregivers nearby and you:
- Have physical limitations or frailty that could make it hard to act quickly during a disaster
- Need extra time or help to respond to emergency instructions
- Have cognitive challenges that affect decision-making
- Rely on electricity for life-sustaining medical equipment
- Have difficulty understanding or responding to emergency alerts due to speech or hearing impairments
Please remember: Family, friends, and caregivers are the first line of support during emergencies. This registry is meant for those who do not have that support nearby.
Who Should Not Register
The registry is not intended for:
- Residents of assisted living facilities, nursing homes, or other licensed care homes
- People who already have built-in support systems at home, such as medical alert services
- Individuals who are generally able to respond to emergencies without special assistance
- Anyone living outside Fredericton city limits
For emergencies that affect only one building, like a house or apartment fire, Fredericton’s emergency responders will assist and evacuate residents as needed. If believe you need to evacuate your home and are unable to do so, call 9-1-1 and let the dispatcher know you need help.
In some situations, firefighters may ask residents to stay inside their homes or apartments for safety reasons. They are trained to make these decisions based on the conditions at hand. We encourage you to trust their judgment and follow their instructions.
Why You Should Register
By joining the registry, emergency personnel will be aware of your specific needs and better prepared to help you during a large-scale emergency.
If a disaster or extended power outage occurs, a trained professional may contact you by phone or visit in person to check on your well-being. If needed, they can assist with evacuating your home safely.
Important Note:
All households should have an emergency plan that includes an emergency kit that will sustain you for at least 72 hours.
