The Fredericton Police Force's Direct Action Response Team (DART) continues to deliver positive results through proactive enforcement, officer mentorship and collaboration with specialized policing and community partners. During a recent two-day operation targeting areas associated with ongoing community concerns, DART members addressed public drug use, petty crime and street-level disorder while providing junior officers with hands-on experience in intelligence-led policing, investigations and enforcement.
The two-day operation resulted in:
• 10 arrests (7 of which were for open air drug use)
• Four warrants executed
• Approximately 10 grams of illicit drugs seized (methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl)
• Multiple prohibited weapons seized, including brass knuckles and a spring-loaded knife
• One imitation firearm seized
• Two arrests involving firearm-related offenders
• Stolen property recovered (bicycles, shopping carts), with assistance from Community Safety Services Unit (CSSU)
• Enforcement action and proactive engagement at several locations of concern throughout the city
A key focus of the operation was addressing open-air drug use and related disorder in areas that generate frequent community complaints. Officers proactively engaged individuals involved in drug use and criminal activity in public spaces, while taking enforcement action where appropriate. The initiative also resulted in the removal of individuals and encampments from trails, public spaces and other locations where ongoing concerns had been reported.
“The results of this operation demonstrate the value of combining proactive enforcement with officer development, strong community partnerships, and coordinated support from specialized units,” said Det. Alan Irvine, DART Coordinator. “ DART continues to deliver results by addressing community concerns related to open-air drug use and associated criminal activity, while supporting the development of the Fredericton Police Force’s next generation of officers.”
DART operations will continue throughout the summer as the Fredericton Police Force works to disrupt criminal activity, address quality-of-life concerns and maintain a visible presence in areas where it is needed most.
