Streets & Sidewalks

Manhole Access

The City of Fredericton coordinates access to manholes for authorized work such as underground inspections, infrastructure upgrades, and utility installations. Access is managed to ensure safety, system integrity, and minimal disruption to public infrastructure.

In limited circumstances, assistance may be provided to retrieve items lost within municipal infrastructure, subject to operational capacity and safety considerations.

Sidewalk or Curb Conditions

The City maintains public sidewalks and curbs to support safe and accessible travel for pedestrians and vehicles. Regular inspection and maintenance help address common issues, including:

  • Cracked or deteriorating sidewalk surfaces
  • Uneven or shifted sidewalk panels
  • Obstructions caused by debris or natural growth
  • Damaged or missing curbs
  • Accessibility gaps, such as missing curb ramps
  • Surface conditions impacted by water or ice accumulation

Road Conditions

Fredericton is committed to maintaining a safe and reliable roadway network. Ongoing maintenance and monitoring address a range of conditions that can affect travel safety and infrastructure performance, including:

  • Pavement deterioration, such as potholes and large cracks
  • Debris impacting roadway safety
  • Standing water or drainage-related issues
  • Seasonal snow and ice conditions
  • Damaged or missing traffic signage
  • Structural concerns, such as sinkholes or localized road collapse

Potholes

Potholes commonly develop in climates with frequent freeze-thaw cycles. Water entering small cracks in pavement expands when frozen and contracts when thawed, weakening the road surface over time. Traffic further accelerates this deterioration, eventually resulting in surface failure.

The City of Fredericton’s Roadway Operations Division is responsible for addressing potholes through regular maintenance, tracking high-risk areas, and responding to reports from the public. If you notice a pothole on a city-owned street, please contact Service Fredericton by phone (506.460.2020) or email service@fredericton.ca.

Curb Cut or Driveway Inquiry

Curb cuts are designed to provide safe and accessible transitions between streets, sidewalks, and private driveways. They support both vehicle access and pedestrian mobility, including use by individuals with mobility devices, strollers, and bicycles.

Installation or modification of curb cuts must align with municipal standards and permitting requirements to ensure safety, accessibility, and proper drainage.

A curb cut permit is issued through the Building Permits & Licenses service. Click here to learn more.

Blocked Drain or Culvert

Stormwater systems, including drains and culverts, play a critical role in managing runoff and reducing the risk of flooding. Blockages may result from debris accumulation, sediment buildup, ice, or structural issues.

Maintaining proper drainage helps:

  • Reduce flood risk on streets and adjacent areas
  • Protect infrastructure from erosion and damage
  • Support environmental health and water flow

The City maintains public stormwater infrastructure to ensure continued performance and resilience.

Garbage Bin Overflowing

The City maintains over 220 garbage bins across trails, sidewalks, parks, and other public spaces to support cleanliness and reduce waste-related impacts. Servicing schedules are designed to meet typical usage patterns and are adjusted to address seasonal demand and higher-traffic areas.

If you’ve come across an overflowing garbage bin that needs changed sooner rather than later, please let us know by contacting Service Fredericton by phone (506.460.2020) or email service@fredericton.ca.
