Priorities and goals established by Fredericton City Council will help support the city's future growth through commitments to community safety, affordable recreation amenities, infrastructure renewal, and quality of life investments.

City Council unveiled their vision, strategic themes, and term goals during a recent open meeting of the Governance and Civic Engagement Committee meeting.

Following the 2026 municipal election, which saw Fredericton residents elect a new mayor, eight new councillors, and re-elect four councillors, Mayor and Council have established their strategic themes that will shape their term through May 2030.

“These priorities set a clear path forward for our community and reflect what we heard from residents during the campaign,” said Mayor Steve Hicks. “They position Fredericton to embrace future opportunities and will serve as our roadmap as we work collaboratively to deliver meaningful results for Fredericton residents.”

Council’s vision is to create “a leading, vibrant, safe, and inclusive capital city that fosters community pride, connection, and opportunity for current and future generations”.

To complement the vision, Council developed five strategic themes related to community safety, building and connecting community, people-focused leadership and creating the conditions to enable community vibrancy.

Key goals for this term include:

  • Collaborate with partners to address community impacts associated with the location of the Victoria Health Centre and related social challenges.
  • Advancing the development of a new community aquatic facility that meets current and future needs.
  • Advance Vision 2030 and other strategic economic development opportunities that strengthen Fredericton’s economic competitiveness and long-term prosperity.
  • Advance the Southeast Growth Plan (Doak Road Growth Node).
  • Develop a Riverfront Secondary Plan and advance activation opportunities that increase public use, economic activity, recreation, and community engagement.
  • Establish the conditions necessary to support the future development of a fieldhouse and related recreation infrastructure.

The priorities, strategic themes, and term goals were developed collaboratively by Mayor and Council with support from City staff.
