The City’s popular Artist in Residence Program is back for its seventh summer at Killarney Lake Park and the Fredericton Botanic Garden at Odell Park.
The program, which runs between June 30 and Aug. 22, provides a unique opportunity for artists to work on creative projects in Fredericton’s natural surroundings, while also engaging with residents and visitors about their work and creative process. Those interested can follow the artist’s social media for updates on their creative journey and to learn about specific interactive opportunities such as artist talks, demos, and workshops.
The following artists will be shaping their work at Killarney Lake Park:
-
Kenzie Robichaud works primarily in large-scale acrylic mixed-media painting, capturing candid, everyday moments with vibrant colour and texture. As a McMaster University BFA graduate, her practice is rooted in themes of stillness, nature, and personal history.
-
Sarah Maloney, RCA, is a 2012 inductee into the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and has exhibited nationally and internationally. Her 35-year retrospective, Pleasure Ground: A Feminist Take on the Natural World, is touring Canada and is now on display at the Beaverbrook Art Gallery.
-
Emily Kennedy is a cellist and composer adept in a wide variety of genres. In a standard day she can be found traveling between Elm City String Quartet rehearsals, crafting ambient cello tracks, and writing for the chamber-pop band Pallmer. Often seen collaborating across disciplines and art forms, her personal writing is an opportunity to synthesize her classical training with her interests in improvisation, contemporary composition, and the natural world.
-
Eereen Shevchenko is a papercutting artist originally from Ukraine, now residing in Fredericton. For her, art is a way to tell stories without words. She discovered Vytynanka (Ukrainian style of paper cutting) while studying Fine Arts and was fascinated by how simple cuts create entire worlds. After earning a master's in design, she returned to the craft with a new passion.
Meanwhile, these artists will be creating new work at the Fredericton Botanic Garden next to Odell Park:
-
Caoife Garvey is an Irish textile artist based in Fredericton. She is a graduate of NBCCD where she now works as an instructor in the Textile Design and Foundation Visual Arts programs. She specializes in weaving and wet felting techniques and works primarily with natural fibres such as linen, paper, wool, and natural dyes. Her recent artistic practice has been inspired by landscape and local flora.
-
Gary Crosby is a woodcarver and first embarked on his artistic journey at a young age. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1981 and travelled the world including the Black Forest region of Germany, the historical landscapes of Bosnia, the vibrant cultures of Sierra Leone, the poignant beauty of Rwanda in Central Africa, and the rugged terrains of Afghanistan, & Honduras in Central America. Gary seized every moment in each location to engage with local artists, learning their techniques and cultivating his distinctive artistic voice.
-
Neomi Iudit is a multidisciplinary artist working primarily in theatre and poetry, creating works that feel intimate and unexpected. Informed by her experience as a racialized immigrant and a Queer and disabled artist, Neomi is working to build a practice that affirms the autonomy of marginalized people in creative spaces.
-
Kim Stillwell is a multidisciplinary artist based in Keswick Ridge. Her work takes shape in many forms such as fibre art, ceramics, metal clay jewelry and painting. She is deeply influenced by nature, in which her markings, imagery and colors reflect a poetic take on her experiences in the Maritimes. Kim participates in artisan shows, artist residencies, teaches workshops and creates within her family-run art studio; Ridge Works Studio.
