The City of Fredericton’s popular Artist-in-Residence program is back and seeking submissions from local artists interested in leaving their studios, working in the great outdoors and connecting with the community.
This is the eighth summer in a row the city has run the program, which will be taking place at the Fredericton Botanic Garden from July 6th to August 28th. The Fredericton Botanic Garden, located next to Odell Park, covers 21 hectares of mixed forests, fields, and garden beds. The vast natural environment lends itself to artistic inspiration and is home to magnolias, rhododendrons, peonies, lilacs and the Pollinator and NB Literature gardens.
“The Fredericton Botanic Garden is thrilled to once again be home to the annual Artist-in-Residence program and looks forward to welcoming local artists back to the space to create and connect with the community” said Linda Stephenson, Executive Director of the Fredericton Botanic Garden Association. “The garden lends itself well to the creation of art and provides opportunities for art to be part of everyday life.”
Residency periods last for two weeks (Monday – Friday), and artists are provided with a weekly stipend of $500. While artists are encouraged to explore and create in the gardens for as long as they are inspired, artists are required to be in residence and accessible to the public for four hours daily.
This residency is open to all artists working in any medium; however, preference will be given to work that lends itself to community engagement.
In addition to providing an opportunity for creation, the residency program is designed for artists to engage with park and garden users. Artists are encouraged to be active on social media with brief daily updates on their residency, as well as occasional, in-depth activities such as demos, artist talks, or workshops.
Selected artists will be based out of the Old Potting Shed, located off the Cameron Court entrance of the botanic garden, however artists are free to move throughout the garden as part of their creative process and will be provided with portable lawn signs indicating that they are the ‘Artist in Residence’.
Interested artists can check submission guidelines on the city’s website. Artists are asked to check available park amenities listed under submission guidelines to ensure the location is suited to their needs.
Interested artists are asked to submit their application via email to culture@fredericton.ca by 4:30 pm on March 27th, 2026.
