As students return for another academic year, the Fredericton Police Force and its community partners are working together to support a safe, respectful and welcoming College Hill neighbourhood.
Building on the positive feedback received last year, partners will take a similar proactive and collaborative approach this fall. The focus will be on early communication, education and direct engagement with students, landlords, residents and post-secondary institutions, supported by visible enforcement when required.
Communications and engagement activities will include:
• Door-to-door outreach in the College Hill neighbourhood
• A coordinated social media and public education campaign
• Direct engagement with the University of New Brunswick, St. Thomas University, New Brunswick Community College and student leaders
• Ongoing communication with landlords, property managers and residents
• Distribution of educational materials
The coordinated operational effort will involve the Fredericton Police Force, Fredericton Fire Department, Justice and Public Safety, UNB Security, the City of Fredericton’s Community Safety Services Unit, and the City’s Operations and Engineering and Parks and Trees divisions. Together, these partners will support education, outreach and enforcement activities aimed at maintaining a positive environment for everyone who lives, studies, works in or visits the College Hill area.
An increased public safety presence will be in place throughout September, with additional attention during key periods, including student move-in, Orientation Week, the first weekend of classes, sanctioned campus events, known unsanctioned events and Homecoming activities.
Police are reminding community members that excessive noise, property damage, blocked roads, unauthorized outdoor fires, public drinking, underage drinking and aggressive behaviour can result in fines or criminal charges. These actions can also affect the safety and well-being of neighbours and the broader community.
Landlords and property managers are encouraged to discuss expectations with tenants early, share relevant safety information and contact police if concerns arise. Students and residents are also encouraged to act responsibly, respect their neighbours and help make College Hill a welcoming place for everyone.
