Fredericton residents Jason Young and Bruce Clark were recognized with the City of Fredericton's Citizen's Merit Award following a recommendation by the Fredericton Police Force (FPF).
The award was presented at the City of Fredericton Public Safety Committee meeting on Aug. 25, 2026, in recognition of the men's actions in helping save the life of a young man in distress on the Wolastoq/Saint John River.
On Oct. 4, 2025, FPF responded to an incident involving an 18-year-old male who had entered the river from the Westmorland Street Bridge. Acting without hesitation, Young and Clark, who were fishing nearby, responded in their vessel, secured the individual from the water and brought him safely to shore, where emergency responders took over.
Police later determined that, given the river conditions and the individual's circumstances, their actions directly prevented serious injury or loss of life.
"The actions of Jason Young and Bruce Clark exemplified the courage, compassion and selflessness that help make our community stronger and safer," said Deputy Chief Brian Ford. "Their willingness to act in a moment of crisis undoubtedly made a difference and serves as an example of the very best of Fredericton."
FPF was proud to recommend Young and Clark for the Citizen's Merit Award and extends its sincere appreciation for their outstanding actions and commitment to the safety of others.
Their actions serve as a powerful reminder that public safety is a shared responsibility and that individual acts of courage and compassion can have a profound impact. The Fredericton community is stronger because of residents who are willing to step forward and help others in times of need.
