Every July and August, artists in the Summer Artist in Residence Program spend two weeks ‘in residence’ at the Fredericton Botanic Garden, creating special projects and art pieces inspired by their surroundings.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to visit the garden and talk with the artists to learn more about their work and creative process. Be sure to follow the artists’ social media to watch their creations evolve.
Stephanie Sirois: July 6 - 17
Stephanie Sirois is a jewellery artist that roots their work in translating complex ideas and emotions into wearable forms. Focusing on themes of hope, belonging and protection, Stephanie aims to create art pieces with meaning that evolves with the wearer and moments of connection that linger beyond the act of wearing.
Hayley Monroe is a painter and printmaker who focuses on exploring the natural world and portraiture. Oil painting allows her to work fluidly to create something rich and complex whereas printmaking pulls her back in and results in something succinct. While capturing the complexity of her environment, she aims to convey its vitality in an impactful way.
Greg Charlton is a multidisciplinary visual artist who concentrates on themes involving time, place and change. His artwork weaves the past into the present by referencing communities and art history sources. Greg plans to combine graphite, charcoal and watercolour to create several landscape drawings and paintings while at the Fredericton Botanic Garden.
Lisa Robinson is an artist and educator who invites the public to learn alongside her about Odell Park’s biodiversity. She will create works in oil, acrylic, and pencil that celebrate the park's native trees and plants in different seasons. Lisa’s joyful and vibrant artwork is a catalyst for connection and conservation.
The program provides a unique opportunity for artists to move their studio outdoors into the community-run Botanic Garden next to Odell Park on the southside.
At the Fredericton Botanic Gardens, situated at the western end of Odell Park, artists “in residence” create works of art inspired by the lush and flourishing scenery. Bursting with life and colour, the streams, springs, and flourishing habitats are sure to spark the artists’ creativity.
Artists are required to engage with park and garden users daily on-site. Artists are encouraged to be active on social media with brief daily updates on their residency as well as occasional activities, such as a demo, artist talk, or workshop. Selected artists are free to move throughout the garden as part of their creative process and will be provided with portable lawn signs, which indicate that they are the ‘Artist in Residence’.
This residency is open to all artists working in any medium, however preference will be given to work that is conducive to community engagement. The artist is expected to be in residence Monday to Friday, for 4 hours daily (between 10am – 4pm approximately). Residency periods are for two weeks with a stipend of $500 per week.
An exhibition of the works created during the residencies will be planned for September at the Charlotte Street Arts Centre.
