The City of Fredericton is re-opening and enhancing the Rental Housing Grant on June 10, 2026 to continue to increase the supply of rental housing and support the city’s Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) targets.
The total number of units that can be funded per project under this grant will increase from 10 units to 20 units.
To date, funding under this grant has been approved for 18 projects. HAF funding has been committed to 166 units within those projects.
“Fredericton’s private and not-for-profit development community continue to respond to the city’s rapid growth with unprecedented levels of construction” said Councillor Jason LeJeune, a member of the city’s affordable housing committee. “This grant has already supported the creation of 166 units and through this new intake will continue to support the construction of more affordable places for people to live.”
The grant is open to previous recipients and new applications. Projects that have already been awarded funding under the grant will only be eligible to apply for additional funding if they have not yet received a building permit. Applications must be received by June 26, 2026. Applications will be ranked based on program criteria, with priority given to non-profit and co-operative housing developers.
Only top-ranking projects that receive a building permit by September 30, 2026 and that complete the project’s foundation by December 31, 2026, will be eligible for the additional funding. Due to funding limitations, only the base amount of funding ($10,000 per unit for private developers, and $20,000 per unit for non-profit developers) will be available for additional funding beyond 10 units.
The number of projects awarded will depend on the availability of remaining HAF funding and is subject to the City’s receipt of its fourth and final installment of funding.
The original grant program provided $10,000-$40,000 per newly developed affordable rental housing unit to non-profit and private sector developers.
In December 2023, the City of Fredericton entered into an agreement with the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) to receive $10.27 million in funding through the HAF. To learn more about the City of Fredericton’s affordable housing strategy and financial incentives visit City's website.
