The Fredericton Police Force extends its deepest condolences to the Montreal community following the tragic shooting that has claimed the life of a police officer, a civilian and sent another officer to hospital. Our thoughts are with the families, their colleagues, and all those impacted by this event.
Monday marks the third time in less than two weeks that a police officer in Canada has been killed in the line of duty, with recent incidents involving the Ontario Provincial Police and Toronto Police Service. This is a sobering and deeply concerning reality that underscores the risks faced daily by police officers and the communities they serve.
In recognition of the fallen officer, the Fredericton Police Force flag will be flown at half-mast as a mark of respect and solidarity.
We are also mindful of the broader and growing concern surrounding violence toward police, including the role that radicalization can play in contributing to these acts. This is not an abstract issue, and tragically, it is something we have experienced firsthand here in Fredericton.
The events of August 10, 2018, remain a profound and painful reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement and the lasting impact such tragedies have on families, colleagues, and the community.
In moments like these, policing communities across Canada stand together in solidarity – supporting one another, sharing information, and relying on the training, systems, and partnerships in place to respond to evolving threats. At the same time, we draw strength from our colleagues and the communities we serve, recognizing that public safety is a shared responsibility. Through continued collaboration, vigilance, and compassion, we can confront these challenges together.
On behalf of the Fredericton Police Force, we stand with our policing partners in Montreal, Toronto, and across Canada.
