An early morning incident on May 19 resulted in the arrest of a suspect, with the K9 unit assisting in the response.

At approximately 2:00 a.m., police responded to a report of a man attempting to steal gasoline by drilling into the gas tank of a truck on Carmen Avenue. Upon officer arrival, a lone male suspect fled the scene on foot.

Officers called on FPF’s K9 team, Constable Steve Burgess and PSD Jago, to assist in the search of the area where the individual was last seen. PSD Jago quickly identified a scent and led officers into a nearby wooded area. Demonstrating strong focus and consistent tracking behaviour, Jago followed the scent without distraction through challenging terrain.

The search concluded when PSD Jago located a 47-year-old male in the nearby woods. The individual was taken into custody and is facing theft and mischief charges. He was released on conditions and is scheduled to appear in court on July 27, 2026.

No injuries were sustained, and PSD Jago was not required to use force during the apprehension.

This outcome reflects the specialized training and effectiveness of the Fredericton Police Force’s K9 unit. PSD Jago’s tracking ability played a key role in locating the suspect quickly and bringing the situation to a safe resolution.
