Urban Forest Fire

How Can I Prevent and Prepare For An Urban Forest Fire? Be FireSmart!

The provincial FireSmart NB program focuses on local needs and challenges to provide tailored resources and guidance to equip New Brunswickers with the tools to protect their homes, businesses, and communities from the increasing threat of wildfires in our changing climate.

  • Have an emergency plan for you and your family (use the Government of Canada’s guide) and practice fire drills regularly with your family.
  • Keep a 72-hour emergency kit at home.
  • Review and maintain your evacuation plan.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher at home and know how to use it.
  • Have a good sprinkler and keep it accessible.
  • Have a working smoke detector on every floor and in all sleeping areas. Change the batteries every six months.

What Should I Do If I See A Forest Fire Approaching My Home?

  • Call 9-1-1 if you see a wildfire that seems to be unattended.
  • Stay tuned to your local radio station for up-to-date information on the fire and possible road closures.
  • Keep all doors and windows closed.
  • Remove flammable window coverings.
  • Keep all the lights on to help you see better in case smoke fills the house.
  • If enough water is available, turn sprinklers on to wet the roof and any water-proof valuables.
  • Be prepared to evacuate your family and pets to a safe location and do so if told by authorities.
