Firefighters in Fredericton responded to a fire on the city’s north side late Wednesday night. The fire broke out shortly after 11:30 p.m. at the Johnston Avenue Senior Centre. There were no injuries involved in the incident.

Firefighters controlled the fire shortly after 12 a.m. The damage was limited to one unit inside the building, and a section of the attic space above the fire. The area was cleared at 1:30 a.m.

“The quick action of our members, combined with the early alert from the smoke alarm was key in preventing what could have been a much more dire outcome,” said David McKinley, Assistant Deputy Chief of the Fredericton Fire Department. “This incident underscores the importance of having functioning, monitored smoke alarms.”

A total of five fire apparatus was dispatched to the scene, with 20 Fire Department staff, including one fire investigator.

The Fredericton Fire Department would like to remind the public to ensure that smoke alarms are installed and properly maintained in their homes and buildings. Regular testing of alarms can save lives in the event of a fire emergency.
