Northumberland Phase 2 (Brunswick to Saunders)

Project Type:Construction Projects
Project Subtype:Neighborhood Projects

The City is undertaking Phase 2 of the Northumberland Street Infrastructure Upgrades project. This work includes the renewal of underground water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer mains from just south of the Brunswick Street intersection through the Saunders Street intersection. These upgrades will improve infrastructure reliability, increase stormwater capacity, and support long-term climate reslilience.

What to Expect:

Traffic Impacts:

  • Northumberland Street will be closed to through traffic for approximately 12 weeks between mid-May and the end of August.
  • No official detour will be in place, but residents will retain access to their homes.

Public Transit Impacts:

  • Public transit routes are not expected to be affected.

Pedestrian Access:

  • Sidewalks will be closed for the duration of construction.
  • Driveway access will generally be maintained or re-established at the end of each workday.
  • Short periods or restricted driveway access may occur, with advance notice provided to residents.

What is Being Accomplished?

  • Infrastructure Renewal: Replacement of aging water and sewer infrastructure will improve service reliability and performance.
  • Stormwater Management: Upgraded stormwater mains will help manage increased rainfall and reduce flood risks.
  • Traffic Calming: Raised intersections will be installed at George Street, Charlotte Street, and Saunders Street to enhance pedestrian safety and slow vehicle speeds.

The Benefits:

  • Increased Reliability: Replacing aging infrastructure will reduce the risk of service failures and disruptions.
  • Flood Resilience: Improvements will help mitigate flooding caused by heavy rainfall and water runoff from Fredericton's hilly south side.
  • Enhanced Safety: The installation of raised intersections will create a safer environment for pedestrians and motorists.

Will There be More Construction in the Future?

Yes. A final phase of upgrades from Saunders Street to Argyle Street is planned in the near future.

Project Funding

This project is partially funded through the Canada- New Brunswick Integrated Bilateral Agreement under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program- Green Infrastructure Project: Fredericton- South Core Flood Resiliency Project.

  • 23.33% funded by  Infrastructure Canada (INFC)
  • 50.00% funded by the Regional Development Corporation (RDC)
  • 26.67% funded by the City of Fredericton

Are Any Trees Being Removed?

No tree removals are anticipated for this project.

How Does This Fit Into Long-Term Planning?

This project is part of the South Core Flood Resiliency Project, which aims to reduce the risks of flooding, support long-term infrastructure sustainability, and improve public safety. The upgrades address the combined challenges of climate change, population growth, and aging infrastructure in Fredericton's south core.
