George Street Infrastructure Upgrades

Project Type:Construction Projects
Project Subtype:Neighborhood Projects

The George Street Infrastructure Upgrades project includes the renewal of underground water, sanitary sewer, and storm sewer mains in front of George Street Middle School. The key objective is to intercept a storm main that currently crosses the school property and redirect the flow to Regent Street. The project is partially funded by the IBA (Integrated Bilateral Agreement) South Core Flood Resilience Fund.

What to Expect:

Traffic Impacts:

  • George Street will be closed to through traffic for approximately 8 weeks from the end of June to the end of August.
  • No detour plan will be implemented.
  • Residents will still be able to access their homes.

Public Transit Impacts:

  • Public Transit is not expected to be affected.

Pedestrian Impacts:

  • This project will have localized impacts on pedestrian traffic.

Additional Upgrades:

  • This project may include trail improvements, new connections, or other complementary projects.

Project Timing & Future Work:

Why is This Project Being Undertaken Now?

  • This project required upgrading infrastructure on Regent Street to provide a connection for the storm sewer. It is part of a planned sequence of projects leading up to this phase.

Will There be More Construction on These Roads in the Coming Years?

  • There are no current plans for additional work on George Street in the coming years.

Are Any Trees Being Removed?

No tree removals are anticipated for this project.

How Does This Fit Into Long-Term Planning?

This project renews aging infrastructure, reducing the infrastructure deficit, and upgrades the downtown storm sewer system to improve flood resilience. Additionally, it redirects the storm sewer away from the school property, which will allow for future development without restrictions.
