The City of Fredericton is launching a new Off-Leash Dog Trail Pilot Program at Killarney Lake Park — the first of its kind in any City-owned park. This initiative reflects Fredericton’s ongoing commitment to providing affordable, inclusive, and accessible recreation opportunities for all residents, including our four-legged companions.

Designed to offer both people and pets a more dynamic outdoor experience, the pilot will allow dog owners to walk their dogs off-leash along a designated trail section, clearly marked with signage. Running from May 15 to October 15, the program gives dogs the chance to play, explore, and socialize in a safe, natural environment, while owners enjoy more exercise and connection with nature.

The off-leash area is part of an existing trail network and has been selected with care to ensure minimal disruption to other park users. Dogs must remain leashed throughout the park except while in the designated off-leash section.

This initiative supports the City’s broader goal of enhancing community spaces and improving the overall quality of life for residents. As always, park users are encouraged to enjoy the trails responsibly and help keep them clean for everyone.

“This pilot reflects our commitment to making recreation more accessible and inclusive for all residents,” said Ruth Breen, Chair of the Livable Community Committee. “We’re proud to continue expanding opportunities for connection, activity, and enjoyment in Fredericton’s natural spaces.”

The pilot project is part of a series of upgrades planned for Killarney Lake Park under the City’s newly adopted Recreation & Leisure Master Plan. Other improvements at the park include a new disc golf course, enhanced ski trails, and expanded walking and biking trails, ensuring there's something for everyone in every season.

“With these upgrades, Killarney Lake Park will be an even better destination for families, individuals, and pet owners to explore, exercise, and have fun,” added Bobby Depres, Manager of Recreation, Culture, and Community Development.
