The City of Fredericton has successfully restored and returned two iconic 19th century cannons back to Officers’ Square. The cannons, which date back to the 19th century, were removed in 2018 for the revitalization of Officers' Square. The historic cannons had been a popular feature in downtown Fredericton for many years. Over time, their wooden base and metal exterior began to deteriorate.
The restoration project, undertaken by a team of local experts, involved meticulous conservation efforts to preserve the structural integrity and historical authenticity of the cannons.
During restoration, previously unknown details such as the cannons weight, king's arrow, (denoting it was property of the Crown), original manufacturer, and royal cypher (kings’ monogram) were revealed, giving staff a better understanding of their original history. The cannons were reinstalled Monday, May 05, 2025, with their “Garrison Red” bases.
Officers’ Square, in the Historic Garrison District of downtown Fredericton, officially reopened to the public in June 2024. For more information, visit the City’s website at www.fredericton.ca and search “Officers’ Square.
