Heavy snowfall, freezing rain and extreme cold temperatures can occur often during winters in Fredericton. Use the following tips to keep you and your family safe.

Snow and ice storms can result in downed power lines. If you see a downed power line, STAY AWAY. For your safety, always stay at least 10 metres away from down power lines and anything that they touch (trees, puddles, vehicles, etc.). What should I do during winter storms or extreme cold?

Consider staying indoors and avoid travel.
If travel is necessary, use extreme caution and travel in daylight. Tell someone your destination, route and expected arrival time.
Never operate a generator, BBQ, camping stove, or propane heater inside your house, garage or near an open window/air intake.
Keep all chimneys and vents clear to prevent carbon monoxide from backing up into your home or building.
Dress warmly if you go outside. Dress in layers in case the weather changes.

What can I do to drive more safely during the winter?

Before winter, make sure your vehicle is ready for winter conditions. Install winter tires consider a tune-up. Refill your windshield washer fluid reservoir.
Listen to local radio stations for traffic and weather updates. If road conditions are poor, consider delaying your trip until conditions improve.
When traffic lights are not operating, treat intersections as four-way stops.
Before you leave, make sure your windows, mirrors, headlights, and brake lights are completely clear of snow and ice. Clean the snow from the top of your vehicle. Failure to do so can cause serious safety issues for you and for other motorists.
Give yourself extra time to reach your destination.
Drive carefully: Reduce your speed, use brakes lightly, and turn on headlights. Leave extra distance between you and other cars. Leave at least 10 metres distance when driving behind salt trucks, or plows. Never pass a plow or salt truck.
Keep an emergency kit in your vehicle and keep your gas tank at least half-full.
