You can help prevent and prepare for an urban forest fire by being Fire Smart!

The provincial FireSmart NB™ program helps to equip New Brunswickers with the tools to protect their homes, businesses, and communities from the increasing threat of wildfires in our changing climate.

How can I prepare for a forest fire?

Have a household emergency plan for you and your family.
Keep a 72-hour emergency kit at home.
Respect all fire restrictions.
Stay informed via local media and City social channels and Fredericton website.
Identify evacuation routes and practice them with family.
Have a plan to transport and care for your pets. Remember, some shelters/comfort centres do not allow pets.
Create a defensible space around your property by clearing leaves, trimming branches, cutting grass short. If possible, keep combustible materials like firewood at least 10 meters away from your home.
Know how to turn off the utilities in your residence. Always turn off propane and natural gas if you evacuate.

In the event of an approaching wildfire

Call 9-1-1 if you see a fire that seems to be unsafe or unattended.
Stay tuned to your local radio stations, and Fredericton social media channels and website for up-to-date information on the fire and possible road closures.
Follow all evacuation orders promptly.
Be ready to transport your pets.
If sheltering indoors, keep all doors and windows. Consider the use of an N95 or equivalent mask if you have respiratory issues.
Keep all the lights on to help you see better in case smoke fills the house.

If you know there is a wildfire nearby, ensure your car is fueled and electronic devices are charged. Have your 72-hour household emergency kit and any important documents and valuables ready in case you must leave quickly.
