The City of Fredericton is investing in six new hybrid diesel-electric buses to support a greener fleet for Fredericton Transit and advance its climate action goals.
Fredericton Transit currently operates 31 buses, including four hybrid diesel-electric models. The new buses will replace aging vehicles over the next two years, helping to modernize the fleet and reduce emissions.
Each bus will be purchased from New Flyer Bus at an estimated cost of $1.4 million. The buses will be financed over a period of ten years, and borrowing has been approved by the Municipal Capital Borrowing Board.
Fredericton Transit buses are on the road for long periods of time every day, and replacing older models with hybrid buses will reduce emissions and help the City meet its climate targets.
As part of its climate change action, the City of Fredericton is committed to reducing the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of its operations and those of the community at large. The City aims to reduce emissions to 50% below 2004 levels by 2030 and attain net-zero emissions by 2050.
Fredericton’s climate efforts are guided by three key plans, developed with input from stakeholders and the public:
- Climate Change Adaptation Plan (adopted in 2020)
- Community Energy & Emissions Plan (adopted in 2021)
- Corporate Energy & Emissions Plan (adopted in 2021)
In September 2024, the City adopted Green Fleet Guidelines for all City-owned vehicles and equipment. These guidelines support Fredericton’s Climate Emergency declaration and recommend choosing low-carbon options when the total cost of ownership is lower than conventional alternatives.
“Investing in six new hybrid diesel-electric buses will support a greener future for the City of Fredericton that is aligned with our current climate change action goals” said Deputy Mayor Jocelyn Pike. “These six new buses will modernize our transit fleet and provide riders with a reliable, comfortable and affordable means of transportation throughout our growing community.”
The agreement to purchase six hybrid diesel-electric buses was approved at the regular City Council meeting held on Tuesday, October 14. Council meetings are livestreamed on the City’s website and available for viewing at any time.
