The Gibson Trail Rebuild and Lighting project involves the reconstruction of the walking trail between the north end of the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge and Gibson Street. The work will include excavating the trail down approximately one foot, placing and compacting new aggregates, and laying new asphalt. The installation of light standards along this section of the trail will also take place simultaneously. 

What to Expect:

Traffic Impacts:

  • On-site detours will be provided and monitored by City personnel for the safe passage of trail users through the construction zone.
  • The trail will return to full use after hours on a daily basis.

Public Transit Impacts:

  • There will be no impact on public transit.

Pedestrian Access:

  • Pedestrian access will be managed via detours. 

What is Being Accomplished?

  • Reconstruction of the walking trail between the north end of the Bill Thorpe Walking Bridge and Gibson Street.
  • Excavation of the trail by about one foot, followed by placing new aggregates and new asphalt.
  • Simultaneous installation of light standards along the section of the trail. 

The Benefits:

  • Improved nighttime visibility and a better feeling of safety for users, especially those walking alone after hours.
  • Enhanced trail usage experience due to new lighting and a smoother, more structurally sound trail.
  • The rebuild will address drainage and structural issues with the existing trail. 

Additional Upgrades:

  • Signage will be installed at key locations along the trail to improve user navigation.

Why is this project being undertaken now?

  • This project is a continuation of work that began in Fall of 2024 and was approved by City Council for funding.

Will there be more construction in the future?

  • No, this is the final phase of the current reconstruction. 

Project Funding:

The project is funded under Trail Improvement Initiatives. 

Are Any Trees Being Removed?

Some branches may be trimmed to prevent interference with the installation of light standards. 

How Does This Fit Into Long-Term Planning?

This project is part of the City of Fredericton’s overall trail improvements initiatives aimed at enhancing the trail system for residents and visitors.
