Description

This 2 ½-storey Classical Revival style dwelling, situated on the south side of Charlotte Street between St. John and Regent Streets, was constructed around 1890.

 

Heritage Value

The heritage value of this dwelling is associated with the residency of the Doherty family. A tailor by trade, James Doherty, was regarded locally as a Gentleman. After emigrating from Ireland, James Doherty settled in Fredericton, residing on first on Brunswick Street and then St. John Street before having this house constructed. James Doherty’s daughters, Elizabeth and Theresa, followed in his footsteps, becoming tailoresses. Elizabeth and Theresa Doherty pursued their tailoring careers by working for well-established retail clothing merchants in Fredericton.

 

When this dwelling was sold in 1924, members of the Doherty family had resided in this house for more than three decades.
