The City is developing plans to build a new ballfield multiplex located in Killarney Lake Park to support the growing needs of ballfield users and local athletic groups, and further position Fredericton as a sports tourism destination.
“As our city grows, thoughtful and proactive planning is needed to continue to provide spaces for people of all ages to participate in sports and recreation,” said Councillor Kelly Murray, Chair of the City’s Livable Community Committee. “As participation in sports like baseball continues to increase, we want to ensure residents have access to facilities that meet their needs for years to come.”
Staff presented the conceptual design for a multiplex to City Councillors during a Livable Community Committee meeting on October 15, 2026.
The multiplex at full build out would include eight ball diamonds and two multi-use athletic fields. Ball diamonds will support the city’s baseball and softball groups, while the multi-use athletic fields will support soccer and football users, and a wide range of recreational activities.
Following the conceptual designs, staff will come back to a future committee meeting with early cost estimates and construction phasing suggestions for Council consideration.
Costs and timelines will be determined by the end of 2026 with initial construction expected to begin in 2027. These investments will help provide spaces for youth and adult recreation as baseball continues to grow in popularity across Fredericton.
Work to determine the future needs for ballfields in Fredericton began in 2020, land identification was completed in 2024. Design work occurred throughout early 2025 and will continue with detailed engineering design work in the coming months.
This approach is aligned with recommendations from the City’s 2025 Recreation and Leisure Master Plan (RLMP) which calls for the development of various new outdoor facilities over its implementation period to meet the needs of a growing and diverse community.
