Energy Savings

Energy use affects many aspects of our daily lives, from heating and cooling our homes, to transportation, and powering the appliances we rely on every day. Homes and buildings are responsible for 56% of greenhouse gas emissions in our community. By using energy more efficiently, residents can reduce household costs, improve comfort, support community climate goals, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Whether you’re a homeowner, renter, or student, there are opportunities to save energy at home, on the road, and in your day-to-day activities.

Home Energy-Saving Actions

Home heating is typically the largest energy user in Canadian homes, accounting for about 62% of total energy consumption. Water heating accounts for approximately 19%, followed by appliances (14%), lighting (3%), and cooling (2%). While home heating uses the most energy, staying warm and comfortable doesn't mean you have to increase your energy bills. Small changes to daily habits and seasonal home maintenance can help keep the heat in, improve efficiency, and reduce energy use year-round.

Not sure where to start? The actions below range from simple everyday habits to larger home improvements. Choose options that work best for your home, budget, and lifestyle. Small changes can add up to significant energy savings over time.
