The City is undertaking essential rehabilitation work on the existing HDPE sanitary forcemain to extend its service life. This project will involve excavation at both ends of the river to access the forcemain, followed by the installation of a thin-walled liner that does not bind to the host pipe. These improvements will enhance the reliability of this critical sanitary river crossing and minimize environmental risks.
What to Expect:
Traffic Impacts:
- Temporary impacts on Riverside Drive and Waterloo Row may occur while equipment is unloaded. To minimize disruption, these activities will be scheduled during off-peak hours.
- Construction will take place near an access vault behind Civic 76 Riverside Drive and another vault near Morrell Park.
Public Transit Impacts:
- Public transit services will not be affected.
Pedestrian Impacts:
- No pedestrian detours are expected,.
What is Being Accomplished?
- Forcemain Rehabilitation: The existing sanitary forcemain will be lined to reinforce its structure and extend its service life.
- Environmental Protection: The improvements reduce the risk of potential forcemain failures, safeguarding the environment and ensuring a more reliable sewage system.
The Benefits:
- Increased Reliability: Strengthening the forcemain will help prevent service interruptions and system failures.
- Flood Resilience: The new liner system is designed to withstand pressures from historical flood events, improving infrastructure stability.
- Support for Growth: Enhancing this essential sanitary crossing supports future developments on Fredericton's south side.
Will There be More Construction in the Future?
There may be a future phase to remove the existing access vaults on either side of the river. A timeline for this work has not yet been determined.
Are Any Trees Being Removed?
Some trees near the south-side access vault may need to be removed to complete the work.
How Does This Fit Into Long-Term Planning?
Rehabilitating this infrastructure ensures redundancy for sanitary flows through the Morrell Lift Station, accommodating both existing developments and future growth in south Fredericton.
